It was among the first structures to be designated as a historic-cultural monument by the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission in 1963. In doing so, she provided an accessible arts center to the community that incorporated and preserved the famous Hollyhock House as a crucial component. Aline Barnsdall’s pioneering vision gave birth to the California Modernism movement and helped grow the careers of notable architects including Wright, Schindler, and Neutra — all of whom were instrumentally involved in the project. Wright is widely considered to be the greatest American architect of the 20th century, and the sites in the group inscription span his influential career. The improvements also included a major restoration of a guest house, known as “Residence A.” A cantilevered balcony on the north side of the structure, which had fallen away, has been fully re-created, with a steel frame to ensure its longevity.
Barnsdall ended up paying upwards of $150,000 for completing only part of Wright's master plan. After Aline Barnsdall donated the house to the City of Los Angeles in 1927, the bedroom walls and plumbing were eliminated to create a long art gallery. It is the first visible element of the Hollyhock House campus upon entrance to the park. The property’s significance extends to its status as both a National Historic Landmark and as Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument #33. Phase 1 of the Residence A restoration project began in 2017 and cost more than $5 million from various sources including City dollars, funding from the former Community Redevelopment Agency, and the National Park Service. As part of Phase 1, exterior finishes were meticulously recreated, structural and seismic work was completed, and building systems were improved. The planned Phase 2 will provide critical interior detailing, furnishings, finishes, and infrastructure repair, as well as exterior landscaping and ADA‐commensurate hardscaping needed to re-open the site to the public. Wright turned to pre-Columbian Mexico for inspiration for the project, giving the home’s exterior the look of an ancient temple.
Exterior finishes long covered by multiple layers of paint have been restored to Wright’s original vision, including art stone that wraps around the building. Variously described as Mayan, Aztec, Asian, Egyptian, and as a “California Romanza” by the architect himself, the Hollyhock House was a transitional structure for Wright. The building bridges the Prairie style of the preceding decades and his textile block structures of the 1920s. Wright’s client, Aline Barnsdall, was the heir of one of the largest independent oil producers in the United States. A fiercely independent feminist who was immersed in the world of experimental theater, Aline flouted convention, first approaching Wright at the height of his personal scandals.
